About Us

       Introduction

It all began in 1981, I had thought for some time about buying a Westie but I would have to travel 50 miles to get one. Travelling that distance then was unthinkable, little did I know the travelling I would do in years to come. Instead I bought a Cairn terrier and his breeder introduced me to the idea of dog shows by telling me he was good enough to show. However I still couldn’t get the Westie out of my mind so finally in May 1982 I made my way to the home of Jimmy and Vici Lowry, (Tervin), where I got “Mac” my first Westie. He was out of Tervin Prudence by Arnholme Alibi.

  • I expressed an interest in showing him and Vici and Jimmy gave me every encouragement. In August that year I entered my first show with my Cairn and Jimmy Guthrie was the Judge. I have never been so nervous in all my life but the bug bit. Over the next year or two Jimmy Lowry taught me how to trim a Westie, many an evening was spent in his home along with Modwena Johnston (Glenveagh) while he showed us his art. I was well and truly hooked.
  • In 1986 I applied for and was granted my affix “Killynether”. It is a forest park on the outskirts of Newtownards where I live. Newtownards is a town on the County Down coast in Northern Ireland and we are only five minutes from Strangford Lough and some lovely scenery.
  • In the 80’s I was unable to get to many Mainland shows as my family were young but I loved going to the open shows at home most Saturdays and Mac did me proud. I did get to the Parent Club Ch Show in 1983 where I got 2nd in Junior Dog behind Ch Haweswalton Sportsman, I felt as if I’d gone BIS at Crufts. I was really impressed with the showmanship of Sportsman and that is how I ended up going into the line I now have. It took me until 1986 to persuade Mrs Hawes that I was a suitable owner for one of her puppies and she let me have Haweswalton Icemaiden at Killynether (Tina) whom I qualified for the Stud Book. She was a real character and a joy to have around.
  • In 1988 she was mated to Ch Haweswalton Houdini and produced Killynether Christabel (Bella) and Ch Haweswalton Ryan. Ryan flew to Mrs Sue Hawes at 12 weeks old and he had a marvellous Show Career winning 8CCs 6BOBs 4RCCs, top Westie 1990 and lived as part of their family for the rest of his life. Bella was a very special dog and much-loved member of our family for 10 years when we sadly lost her. Although she wasn’t shown frequently on the mainland she did produce Ch/Ir Ch Killynether Kavanagh (Buster), my star. Her Mum Tina was also mated to Ch Haweswalton Tomahawk and this time produced Ch/Ir Ch Killynether Kaleidoscope (Kelly) in 1992. Although retired long ago Kelly rules the roost at home and still gets excited when she hears the dog boxes etc coming out for me to go to a show.
  • Buster’s sister Sophie was mated to Ch Karamynd Kasey Jones at Earlsdale in 1999 and produced Killynether Keepsake (Lucy) who had quite a successful show career before retiring to maternity duties. In 2000 I also acquired from Mr B and Mrs L Smith, “Lorbri Jive Talkin’ to Killynether” (Libby) who was 4th in a class of 24 at her first Ch show. These two young ladies were rarely out of the cards at Championship shows and produced my current show team, Killynether Kalendar Girl (Jessica) and Killynether Kimiko (Judy).
